I think my doctor is using me to commit insurance fraud
I started working at a new company last summer and a few of a coworkers I got to know told me I should make use of an insurance benefit / company benefit that I hadn’t heard of. The coworkers (5+) told me I could get free chiropractic adjustments and massages once or twice a month and all suggested I go to one doctor.
I started going earlier this year and found it weird there wasn’t a co-pay each visit. Furthermore, my doctor started telling me that he was going to bill insurance out of network when I had already confirmed before booking my first appointment he was in network. He then stated that he would pay my bills directly to insurance and have me bring in “checks from the insurance company” in the mail. He noted – “I make more money when I charge you as out of network…” followed by “don’t worry about any extra cost associated with it.”
I talked to my fiancé about it tonight and he told me everything sounded very fishy. Mind you, he mentioned it was weird I could receive free massages paid for by company/insurance given that’s usually something on the more “boutique” sides of medical services that aren’t generally covered in full (or without copay).
Is this insurance fraud or medical fraud? He told me to ask Reddit and I’m planning on reaching out to my insurance company about this as soon as I can to verify…
Anyone with any knowledge over what may be ok or wrong with this situation would be very appreciated in responding.
Thanks!
