Septoplasty denied last minute (Non-cosmetic)

Hello, I am looking for guidance here…

I broke my nose in a surfing accident 6 years ago. I had a surgery on my septum shortly after to repair the damage- that was fully covered by insurance. In the years since, my septum has re-deviated (which is fairly common after an initial septoplasty), but even worse this time, and I cannot breathe at all through my nose. It has been this way for over two years. I have to see a specialist for my specific case, because the way it is deviated is not common, and not just any surgeon can work on it (I was denied treatment by a couple other surgeons prior). This specialist is very hard to get a surgery with, and we’ve been waiting for over a year.

I have planned my life around the surgery. I was ready to ship off for the military but could not, in anticipation of this surgery. I’m taking a break from school to get it, and have structured my whole semester to accommodate it. Non-Refundable flights and hotels are booked (I go to school across the country).

My insurance just said it cannot cover parts of the surgery which the surgeon himself is saying are necessary. The out of pocket cost will be 60,000 dollars. The surgeon has already tried to fight it with the insurance company but to no avail. I cannot appeal and wait to reschedule because I am going abroad to study as of July this year, and it is non-negotiable that I keep those plans (for many reasons I won’t get into). If I did reschedule I would have to cancel that, which is just not an option at this point. On top of that…. I can’t breathe, lol. It would be hellish to endure another year of this.

The surgery was scheduled for next Monday, and I am just getting notice of this today. I feel like this is completely, utterly unfair.

Any suggestions on what I can do? I feel like I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Thanks.
