The new CX-50 gives Mazda a second entry in the wildly popular compact crossover segment.
Like the CX-5, the CX-50 offers two 2.5-liter four-cylinder engines, a naturally aspirated base engine and a turbocharged unit in upper trims. Both engines are paired exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive is standard.
The base engine makes 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, while the turbo cranks that up to 256 horsepower and 320 pound-feet on 93-octane fuel or 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet on 87-octane.
The CX-50 rides on a 110.8-inch wheelbase and stretches 185.8 inches overall. Both figures are a few inches greater than the CX-5’s.
Fuel economy with the base engine is 24 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. The turbo gives up 1 mpg in both measures, at 23/29 mpg city/highway.
Typical of Mazda, the CX-50 interior is richly finished.
In all but the base model, the infotainment display measures 10.3 inches and is operated via a rotary controller. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard on all models, but only the top trim has wireless phone charging.
Behind the rear seats, there’s 31.4 cubic feet of cargo space. With the rear seats folded, that increases to 56.3 cubic feet.
The CX-50 is built at a new Mazda-Toyota joint-venture factory in Alabama.
Pricing for the CX-50 starts at $28,025, which is $900 more than the CX-5. The most expensive CX-50 stickers for $42,775.
