Hoping I can get some advice here in my situation. I am a divorced, financially-stable, 40 year-old male who has worked with the same organization for the last 15 years. I have both short-term and long-term disability insurance within my org, with the LTDI paying 66 2/3% of my income (~300K) until I turn 65 should I become totally disabled.

I have interest in getting a private policy. I currently take Cymbalta for anxiety (stable, since 2009), high blood pressure medicine since 2020 (stable), and Prilosec. HOWEVER….since I was 24 years old, I’ve been bounced around rheumatologists and neurologists due to a muscle and joint pain/fatigue issue that waxes and wanes. I’ve never been diagnosed with anything, even with workups at major university medical centers. I was last seen by a neurologist in 2014, and a rheumatologist early this year who put me in hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) ‘just to see’ if it might help.

My concern is that with jobs recently coming and going, I get laid off and my company LTDI becomes irrelevant. There’s no recourse in keeping that post-layoff or firing, correct? Unsure of how this typically works.

However, given where I’m at now….gainfully employed, no definitive diagnosis over two decades, never accessed any sort of disability program during my employment due to this situation….what do you think I could/should do in this scenario?
