Thinking of getting private insurance. Is there a downside?
Hi. So I honestly don’t know that much about health insurance. I’ve always just signed up for whatever they offered at my job. I’ve always worked at hospitals so had pretty good benefits. Last year I switched to a clinic and my benefits are very very different than what I’m used to.
I currently pay $500/month for myself and my daughter. I have a $5,000 deductible. I don’t have co-pays so anytime I’ve been to the doctor I’ve just paid in full because I am no where near my deductible. Same with prescriptions.
I’ve been thinking of getting my own plan. Yesterday I spoke to someone with United Healthcare. The plan seemed to good to be true, but he told me it’s because the plan is hard to be approved for.
My question is what is the downside? This plan would cost me the same monthly but would come with very very low co-pays, benefits if I get into an accident or am hospitalized, etc.
What’s the catch here? I also think I could potentially qualify for government help as a single mom but don’t know where to start or what that looks like.
