Referral from dentist to oral surgeon, but they denied it?

I don't know much about insurance and all its restrictions, but I do need surgical intervention for my severe TMJ.

I got a quick and easy referral from my dentist as all she had to do was touch my face and hear my jaw click to do so. But I called the maxillofacial place specialized in TMJ she referred and they said they don't take my dental insurance after I told them I had a referral. Yes it is a bad hmo dental plan that I have (delta dental hmo). But I thought that was the point of me getting a referral? For it to be covered? The surgery place said they only take the ppo plans.

Also, wouldn't surgical care be medical? I have good medical insurance (aetna choice pos ii ) and all surgical intervention for TMJ is covered in the plan. I definitely do not think a mouth guard or facial massages will assist me.

I think I just might be misled or just asking the wrong questions. Please help thank you!!!!
