Unusual (but great) situation and we could really use recommendations.
My spouse and I are 43 and 61. Retiring in May , we going to spend almost 4 years traveling to over 75 countries. We will only be in the us about 35 days a year. We are both in good health. We don’t mind paying for coverage, but in most cases we will literally be paying for insurance we cannot use. Here are the options I have identified. None are perfect. Most seem like a huge waste of money. I would appreciate anything I am missing or any suggestions you have.
Cobra-Leaves us paying $1300 a month for 35 days a year worth of insurance. It could possibly pay a out of country claim, but it would be self-file, likely out of network and a general nightmare.
ACA-Network is is extremely limited and will only be good for about 35 days a year. Basically useless anywhere but my home state. $1200 per month and a $16-18K out of pocket.
Comprehensive global policy (GeoBlue & Cigna International)-about $1200 per month. High deductible. Would leave us uninsured in the US. Still have networks.
Travel insurance-They all have terrible reputations for actually paying claims. They are cheap. Very few offer an annual policy without limiting the number of days on a single trip. For a “good” one it would cost about $215 per month.
Sidecar Health- Indemnity policy leaves catastrophic exposure, but pay amounts would likely cover expenses anywhere except the US. No network to worry about. $770 per month. It is self-file, but that is their only way to file.
What do you do?
