NSW Government expands bushfire education program

The NSW Government has announced a $400,000 boost for its school bushfire education program to improve preparedness for future events.

The science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) program aims to improve learning outcomes across kindergarten to year 12 and bolster understanding of bushfire management.

“This program will not only educate our children about innovations that can help us to manage the threat of natural disasters, but hopefully inspire a new generation of scientists developing bushfire-management technologies that will grow the economy and create the jobs of the future,” Minister for Science, Innovation and Technology Alister Henskens said.

Education and Early Learning Minister Sarah Mitchell says recent flooding and bushfires have highlighted the need for young residents to “have the knowledge and skills to take action before, during and after a natural disaster”.

The Bushfire STEM in Schools initiative is part of the NSW Government’s broader Bushfire Response Research and Development mission.
