The Nomad looks like a modern gas-powered snowmobile, aside from certain details such as a charge port where a gas-tank filler neck usually goes.
The Nomad’s handlebars seem familiar at first glance, but a closer inspection reveals a toggle switch for the regenerative-braking system, something unique to electric vehicles.
Thanks to the Nomad’s regenerative-braking system, descending steep inclines doesn’t require using the hand brake as much as in a traditional snowmobile.
The Nomad we drove is silent when activated. Its quick acceleration is a byproduct of the electric powertrain’s instant torque.
As an upgrade over the Nomad’s standard powertrain and battery, there’s an optional 120-hp electric motor and a larger battery with a claimed 83 miles of range for an additional $2000.
Taiga offers a Level 2 or a Level 3 onboard charger. The latter allows the battery to charge from zero to 80 percent in about 30 minutes, according to the company.
The Nomad can be charged using a standard 120-volt outlet if necessary, but the standard-size battery would take 13 to 14 hours to fully recharge.
While we don’t expect riders to find many charging stations out in the wilderness or even on popular snowmobile trails, the Nomad can be recharged at the same stations as regular electric vehicles, although not at Tesla Superchargers.
The Nomad’s quick and quiet acceleration is enjoyable, but we think some riders will miss the sounds and smells of a traditional two-stroke engine.
The Nomad we drove was equipped with the $2000 performance suspension that adds upgraded Elka dampers. As tested, our model cost $19,490. Without options, the Nomad starts at $17,490.
