Surprise lab bill, insurance rate versus self pay rate?

Disclaimer: this is my first post here and so sorry if this is the wrong sub!

So I got routine blood work done here in California in May and just got a surprise bill from Quest Diagnostics for $241. Apparently my insurance no longer (as of Feb) covers vitamin D testing. I was never made aware of this or I wouldn’t have gotten the darn test.

I now owe $241, which is the insurance-billed rate.

Meanwhile, Quest Diagnostics lists the self pay rate for this test as $69. I called and spoke with a supervisor, they would not budge that I owe the full amount of what was billed to insurance.

Is there anything I can do? I was thinking of complaining to my doctors office next since they probably have a back channel with the lab and it’s a huge hospital organization.

It upsets me that a private person would be charged over 3x the self-pay rate just because that’s what they bill insurance. Like, you and I are not insurance companies?! Where is the logic. Sigh.

Thanks in advance!!
