To park or not to park; that is the question

One thing that is guaranteed to start an argument! Seems silly really but for some folks, it is a serious matter.

We’ve recently come across a few instances of inconsiderate parkers. Colwyn Bay in North Wales is one of those seaside towns with a population of around 34000. Situated on the coast overlooking the Irish sea, it is a popular holiday destination. Of course, with extra visitors comes extra vehicles and they need somewhere to park.

One resident wrote a polite note and put it on the windscreen of the owner of a vehicle that regularly parked outside their house – clearly not a tourist visiting, but a young lad who worked in the town. Some folks might think this is just being petty, others might think the house owner has every right to complain. The house owner pointed out that there are car parks in the town centre, but we suppose the vehicle owner wanted to save parking fees!

There’s a theme here

Staithes, in North Yorkshire, have also had their fair share of inconsiderate visitors. This old fishing village was once described as a quaint, hidden gem. Locals have said this is no longer the case. It would seem it has been discovered by tourists who park at the bottom end of the village, clogging up roads and leaving residents with nowhere to park their own cars.

Tourists, on the other hand, have complained about irate locals and have started to leave poor reviews on TripAdvisor. Locals have said the village doesn’t have the infrastructure to cope with the large numbers of tourists they are now having to cope with. It has gone from a sleepy little quiet village to a favourite holiday spot almost overnight.

Whilst it has obviously brought income into the village, it seems the locals aren’t that keen on visitors because they are inconsiderate when it comes to parking. Add a caravan to the car and it’s even worse, especially trying to negotiate the narrow, winding roads.

Not everyone who visits is inconsiderate though, with one TripAdvisor visitor stating that they had parked at the top of the village and walked down to the village. Take your time, enjoy the view and don’t upset the locals!

Moving further South (well, kind of)

Finally, in Liverpool, the house owner wasn’t quite as polite as our previous one. When a car parked in front of their house preventing a skip from being collected, this resulted in extra charges for them. The house owner then printed off several notices entitled “selfish, idiotic parking” and stuck them all over the offending vehicle, informing them that their inconsiderate parking had cost them extra hire fees.

Whilst it was clearly very frustrating, as long as the vehicle in question is on the road legally and not parking on the pavement or across a dropped kerb, the driver has every right to park there. Debatable as to whether or not they should.
