After skipping the 2021 model year, the 4-series Gran Coupe returns to the lineup with more power and technology.
The M440i deploys BMW’s venerable inline six-cylinder engine that delivers 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission manages the gear swaps.
It’s quick, all right. We recorded a 60-mph time of 3.9 seconds and a 12.4-second quarter-mile at 111 mph. That matches or beats the base M3 of every previous generation.
The electric version looks identical and is even quicker. The i4 M50 swaps the inline-six for two electric motors and hits 60 mph in 3.3 seconds.
The Gran Coupe has a small back seat but a large cargo hold thanks to a big hatch.
There’s very little that the M440i’s technology can’t do. A voice assistant, semi-automated driving, and the ability to start the car with your phone only scratch the surface.
M Performance models use blue brake calipers, but one can spec red calipers at no cost.
As swift as the M440i is, the steering feel and engine sounds numb the driver’s connection to the road.
Fuel economy is EPA estimated at 22 mpg city and 29 mpg highway.
The 2022 M440i xDrive Gran Coupe starts at $59,195. Our car was $69,570 with options.
