Insurance will not cover my wife’s medication. DESPERATELY seeking advice on next step.

Desperately seeking some guidance. My wife had been suffering from crippling insomnia for almost a year. We tried many different medications, some which made her physically ill, gain weight uncontrollably, NONE of which helped her sleep at all. NOTHING worked, not even heavy doses of Xanax could help her sleep. It was crushing to watch. She’d be unable to sleep for days at a time, and then inevitably crash, then the cycle just continued.

Until FINALLY, we went to a different doctor and she was given samples of Caplyta. And like a light switch, she was able to sleep again and live life like a normal person. I felt like we were saved. I finally got my wife back. Of course, my prescription insurance initially would not cover the medication because there is no generic form. The doctor told us not to worry, she’d give us samples until the insurance got straightened out. Of course, months later, my insurance company still refuses to cover it, and now the doctor almost sounds like she has just given up trying, and is telling us that she can’t continue to give us samples.

I’m no expert, but isn’t there ANYTHING else that we could try ourselves? Isn’t there some kind of appeal process in this situation? I really have no idea how this works, I just have to believe there HAS to be another option. I finally got my wife back to herself and I absolutely cannot watch her fall apart again because our insurance won’t cover the medication that she desperately needs. FYI, without insurance the medication would cost about $2000/month. I’m in a labor union and already pay A TON for our insurance, we simply cannot afford to pay 2000/month. ANY guidance at all on what our next step should be is greatly appreciated.
